Every year we enter our wines into various competitions to benchmark them against other wines. The Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is one of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world. Once again, this year’s awards showcased an impressive array of wines and highlighted the abundance of winemakers, regions, and varieties across the globe.
The Judging Process
DWWA 2024 brought together hundreds of Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers from over 33 countries worldwide, who blind taste over 18,000 wines. The diverse panel of judges and wines establishes the DWWA as the leading authority on wine recommendations.
First, the wines are scored out of 100 by each judge individually and entered into the DWWA computer system. The panel chair then leads a discussion among the entire panel to determine the final score and whether the wine should receive a bronze, silver, or gold medal.
This year, EWGA entered multiple wines, all of which received fantastic scores. We believe we offer the best value for money on wines at all price points and only sell wines that we would be happy to drink ourselves!
Berton Vineyards’ Bonsai Shiraz earned an impressive 93-point rating and a silver medal. This wonderful red wine is produced in the High Eden subregion within Barossa Valley, South Australia. Berton Vineyards have one of Australia’s top 20 largest wineries, with vines thriving at an elevation of approximately 500 meters above sea level!
The Bonsai Shiraz entices with a spicy nose, revealing notes of roasted meat, prunes and black pepper, cedary nuances. On the palate, it delivers a juicy intensity with well-measured tannins, embodying the premium quality and global allure of High Eden’s celebrated red styles.
From Spain’s coastal wine region Rias Baixas, the Veiga Naum Albariño stood out with a silver medal and an impressive 92-point rating. Renowned for its sophisticated white wines, this region takes pride in the native Albariño grape. The terroir, predominantly composed of clay, sand, and limestone, contributes to the unique character of the wines.
This Albariño has enticing aromas of pear, with hints of spearmint, apple skin, and lanolin. On the palate, it offers a generous texture and a distinctive saline finish, embodying the freshness typical of the Rias Baixas region.
At EWGA we are honoured to enhance the development of this great champagne house. Boizel’s Brut Réserve hails from the prestigious Champagne region and was awarded a silver medal and a commendable 91-point rating. With an intimate understanding of each hillside and village, Boizel meticulously sources grapes from the finest crus, ensuring the creation of exceptional Champagnes.
This Brut Réserve has a pretty nose of red berries and blue fruit. On the palate, it offers an exquisite blend of Mirabelle pear, raspberry, tangy stone fruit and a red cherry finish.

Casali Del Barone, 150+1 Barbera – 87 points
Light cherry nose, a touch herbaceous. The palate is juicy of red currant, blueberry, plum, and violet, with prevalent oak, and forest floor finish.

Aromas of fresh chamomile flowers. The palate continues with a floral profile, crisp apple and lemon fruit, and a moderately long, clean finish.

Creamy vanilla on the nose, with notes of mango and lime aromas. Very soft texture on the palate, pithy finish.

Aromatic nose displaying scents of jasmine, lemon zest and blossom. Refreshing and pithy on the palate.

Chocolatey nose, with notes of dried fruits, baking spices and savoury nuances. Creamy yet firm tannins.
Eguren Ugarte, Crianza, Rioja – 90 points
Respectful oak aromas framing ripe plums and blueberries on the nose. Structured and spicy on the palate. Warm and chalky.
Valduero, Tierra Alta en 2 Maderas – 88 points
Quite oaky, with notes of toasty oak, vanilla and bacon fat. Dry palate, with supple tannins.
Clos Montblanc, Únic Chardonnay – 86 points
Spicy and toasty nose with aromas of ripe peaches, caramel and vanilla. Smoky on the palate.
Hambledon, Classic Brut – 92 points
Intense citrus and green apple, layered with evolved gingerbread, brioche, hints of caramel and spice, and a delicate leafy-ness. Rich and textured with a fine mousse.
Claude Baron, Le Saphir Brut – 90 points
Inviting, floral and aromatic lemon on the nose, rich ripe fruit, biscuit and nut on the palate.
Tocavi EscapaT – 87 points
Some wild and animal character under rich forest berry fruits. Mineral and tasty, very fresh.
Bodegas Riojanas, Monte Real, Reserva – 89 points
Traditional savoury nose with aromas of baked plums and smoked game. Earthy palate, juicy finish.
Mt Vernon, Malbec – 86 points
Intense brambled berry fruit with rose, vanilla and hints of Christmas spice. Generous juicy palate with integrated tannins.
Kopke, Colheita, Port 2010 – 92 points
Dried orange blossom, preserved peach and orange marmalade, along with sherbet and candied citrus notes, lovely fresh bees wax character.
Kopke, 10 Year Old Tawny, Port – 91 points
A lovely blend of cherries, caramel, dates, earth, iodine vegetal notes with aguardiente sappiness and a long lingering finish.
Kopke, Colheita, Port 2007 – 94 points
Dried black cherries and floral notes along with cinnamon and caramel adding complexity, fresh and savoury with a sweet spicy finish.
