About

Founded in 1638 by Christiano Kopke and his son Nicolau Kopke, the House of Kopke holds the distinction of being the oldest Port wine export firm. The Kopke family, originally representing the Hanseatic League, quickly established a reputation for producing exceptional wines. Over the centuries, the company has seen various ownerships and has continued to uphold its legacy of quality and tradition.

Throughout the 19th century, members of the Kopke family, including Joaquim Kopke, who was honoured with the title “Barão de Massarelos,” played significant roles in the Oporto trade. The company’s ownership transitioned to the Bohane family in the late 19th century, but the logistical challenges of managing the business from London, exacerbated by the World Wars, led to the eventual sale of the company.

In 1953, the Barros family acquired the House of Kopke. Under the leadership of Manuel Barros and his sons João and Manuel, the company strengthened its reputation and expanded its agricultural activities in the Douro District. The family’s stewardship continued to enhance the prestige of Kopke’s wines.

Kopke is renowned as the oldest Port wine brand and a leader in the “Porto Colheita” category, maintaining its commitment to quality and tradition.
