Marqués de Murrieta

About

Established in 1852 by Luciano Francisco Ramón de Murrieta, Marqués de Murrieta is a historic winery that holds the distinction of being the first established Rioja house. Luciano, who was made Marqués de Murrieta by Queen Isabel II for his pioneering contributions to the region, founded the winery with the vision of producing fine Rioja wines using techniques he learned in Bordeaux. This vision led to the creation of the first fine Rioja wines, which he began exporting in 1852.

After Luciano’s death in 1911, the winery was managed by the Olivares family until 1983, when it was acquired by D. Vicente Cebrián-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell. Under his leadership, the winery aimed to be recognized among the world’s best. Following his sudden death in 1996, his son Vicente Dalmau took over, implementing significant investments in the vineyards and winery, modernizing the estate while maintaining a focus on quality. Today, the winery produces world-class wines, emphasizing low yields and limited production to ensure excellence.

The Marqués de Murrieta estate, known as the Ygay Estate, spans 300 hectares and is located in the southern part of Rioja Alta. It includes the iconic Castillo Ygay, which serves as the winery’s headquarters and was declared a museum in 2019 due to its historical significance. The estate is known for producing premium Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, including the renowned Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial.

Marqués de Murrieta is led by winemaker María Vargas and continues to balance tradition with innovation, producing wines that are celebrated worldwide. The winery’s dedication to quality and excellence has earned it numerous accolades and a reputation as one of Spain’s top wineries.
