MT Vernon winery – An Estate Rich in History
Mount Vernon is celebrated for their handcrafted wines of outstanding quality, embodying the essence of dedication and meticulousness. The winery is situated in the picturesque village of Klapmuts, approximately 15km from Paarl in the Western Cape of South Africa.

MT Vernon winery – An Estate Rich in History

In 2003, David and Debbie Hooper established Mount Vernon Estate near Klapmuts in the Simonsberg-Paarl region. Under their ownership and management, the estate is producing a variety of excellent single vineyard and estate wines, including a Malbec, quite a rarity in the region. John Hooper, their son, is now actively involved in the marketing and creativity of the Mt Vernon wine range and is working on introducing innovative new lines to the market.

The History of Mt. Vernon

At Mt. Vernon Winery, maintaining excellence isn’t just a goal but a tradition that runs deep in the Hooper family. Due to its long ancestry, the name “Vernon” holds significance. The legacy of Vernon Edward Hooper, a highly respected patriarch, is deeply ingrained in the family’s values and principles, inspiring them even today.

Interestingly, Mt. Vernon also shares its name with the historic home of George Washington, the first President of the United States. This connection to American history underscores the winery’s dedication to producing wines that are nothing short of exceptional.

The family crest, which represents honesty and a commitment to providing excellent wines, is prominently displayed on Mt. Vernon’s wine labels. The crest has a significant history, dating back to Sergeant Major Noel Vernon Hooper’s service in the South African army during World War II, during which maintaining honour and integrity was of the highest importance.

Perfecting Their Craft

To craft their exceptional wines, Mt. Vernon Winery went to great lengths to select the perfect vineyard site. The Klapmuts region, nestled in the Western Cape, has a warm climate balanced by refreshing southward breezes during hot summer days. This unique microclimate is perfect for growing premium grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Its commitment to the on-site winemaking process sets it apart from other wineries. From grape cultivation to bottling, this hands-on approach allows them to craft bespoke wines that reflect the region’s terroir.

South Africa: A Wine Lover’s Paradise

South Africa, known for its breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife, is also gaining recognition as a world-class wine-producing country. South Africa’s naturally warmer climate is tempered by refreshing breezes from the south on hot summer days. This combination creates an excellent environment for cultivating outstanding Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. These varietals thrive in the region’s climatic conditions, resulting in wines that showcase these varietals’ rich flavours and complexities.

Additionally, Mount Vernon has gained acclaim for its exceptional Chardonnay wines, which have received numerous prestigious awards. Their Chardonnays exemplify elegance, balance, and finesse.

From vineyard management to grape selection, fermentation, and ageing, no compromise is made in the pursuit of excellence. Each bottle of Mount Vernon wine is a testament to the winery’s unwavering commitment to crafting wines of the highest quality.

Our Range of Mt. Vernon Wines

EWGA Wines proudly offers a selection of Mt. Vernon Winery wines. Here are some of our range:

Unbelievable White and Red

The Unbelievable White and Red wines showcase Mt. Vernon’s commitment to crafting exceptional blends. These versatile, everyday dry wines are perfect for any occasion.

The Red is a Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage blend with an appealing nose that offers ripe berry flavours integrated with wood. The body is well balanced with berry and subtle tannin extracts. The White has crisp Chenin Blanc tones that deliver hints of tropical fruit on the nose and palate. It will go particularly well with spicy food, fresh fish and salads.

Rhino Tears

Rhino Tears is more than just a wine; it’s a commitment to conservation. A portion of the proceeds from every bottle of Rhino Tears sold goes towards protecting South Africa’s endangered rhino population. The idea for the range came about when Mt Vernon MD, John Hooper, spent a couple of days with the field rangers at the Kruger Wilderness Experience bush camp in the Kruger National Park. It was here that the idea for a wine that could raise money for anti-poaching efforts was born.

The Rhino Tears Sauvignon Blanc boasts a nose with subtle notes of nettle and freshly cut grass. The palate is filled with flavours of gooseberry and tropical fruit and finishes off with a zesty dryness that is well-structured. Meanwhile, the red wine blend is made up of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage, and offers hints of strawberry and wild raspberry on the nose. The wine’s oak and light tannins contribute to a complex and well-structured taste. Whether you’re on a game drive, enjoying a sundowner, or simply looking for an everyday wine, both of these options are excellent choices.

Three Peaks

These three peaks make up the Simonsberg mountain’s north-western aspect and overlook the vineyards that produce the grapes for the Three Peaks Range. The flagship range showcases wines crafted with meticulous grape selection and expert craftsmanship, designed with a passion for excellence.

The Three Peaks Sauvignon Blanc is a well-structured wine with a wonderful up-front mouth feel that follows through with a lingering dry finish. A classical, exciting new world wine displaying all the attractive attributes of its cultivar.
